Modern hearing aids are complex pieces of technology. With the advancement in the fields of hardware, software, artificial intelligence, and machine learing, hearing aids have evolved more than ever to cater for your individual hearing and lifestyle needs.

How do hearing aids work?

All hearing aids have the following components 

  1. Microphone:   Picks up sounds in the environment like conversations, background noise, etc. The latest advanced hearing aids come with adaptive directional microphones.

  2. Micro Processor Chip & Amplifier: This is the key component at the heart of the hearing aid. It receives all the sounds from microphone removes unwanted sounds and amplifies them as per your need that your audiologist has programmed.

  3. Speaker/Receiver: The processed sound signals are sent to the speaker which transmits the sounds required for your individual hearing needs to the ear.

With multiple hearing aid manufacturers, competing software, different hardware technologies, hearing aid styles and wide price range, choosing a hearing aid is not straight forward.

It is usually the technology level and not the hearing aid style that determine the cost of the hearing aids

Hearing Aid Styles

Behind The Ear (BTE)

  • The hearing aid sits behind your ear. It Contains all the hearing components: Microphone, microprocessor/amplifier, and speaker.
  • It is connected to the ear with a clear flexible tubing that carries the processed and amplified sound.
  • These are easy to use and easy to clean.
  • They may be better suited for severe – profound hearing loss.
  • They are larger in size that RIC 

Reciver In Canal (RIC)

  • The hearing sits behind your ear. As opposed to BTE it onlly contains microphone and microprocessor/amplifier.
  • The speaker (receiver) sits inside the ear canal and therefore are usually smaller in size.
  • As microphone and speaker are apart it usually have better quality due to less feedback..
  • It is connected to the speaker in the ear canal through a discreet wire which is less noticeable than the plastic tubing in BTE.
  • They are smaller and discreet the BTE 

Custom

  • These hearing aids fit into the ear canal. 
  • They are available in two styles. The in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aid is made to fit the size of a person’s ear canal or completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aid which is nearly hidden inside the ear canal.
  • Due to their small size, these aids may be difficult to use for those with limited fine motor skills.
